Knuckles is the protector of the Master Emerald and the last surviving member of an ancient tribe who looked over the seven Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald which controls them all. He usually resides on Angel Island which floats high in the sky thanks to the power of the Master Emerald. It's rare for him to leave the Island for any reason unless the Emerald is threatened and because of this, he has led a rather solitary life.

The first time we meet him is when Dr. "Eggman" Robotnik crash lands his ship, the Death Egg into Angel Island. Eggman meets Knuckles, who is rather confused that someone has visited his island, and tells him that a blue hedgehog named Sonic and his two-tailed fox friend Miles "Tails" Prower stole the Chaos Emeralds. Because of his unerring duty to the Emeralds, he's easily duped into believing this and he rushes to stop them. He runs into Sonic and takes the seven Chaos Emeralds then runs off. They clash several times before Eggman shows his true intentions, zapping Knuckles and taking the Master Emerald for himself. Knuckles then teams up with Sonic and Tails to stop Eggman and together they take back the Master Emerald, returning it to the Emerald Shrine. Angel Island returns to its rightful place in the sky with Knuckles watching over it once more.

Unfortunately, this isn't the end for this echidna's tale. Naturally, he needs sleep thus he has to take his eyes off of the Master Emerald for at least a little while. It's during one of these naps that the Master Emerald shatters, leaving a strange, blue creature where the gem once sat. Believing the creature is responsible for it, he attempts to fight it but is thrown back. Undeterred, he tries again but the creature disappears before he gets the chance. Since the Emerald is now gone, Angel Island falls, allowing Knuckles to go on his search for the shards of the Emerald so he can repair it. After finding a few, his search leads him to the Casino. Once he steps inside, he's transported to what looks like an ancient civilization. Though he knows he's never been there before, the surroundings seem familiar, not to mention the fact there's a great deal of other echidnas like himself populating it. As he looks around, he sees a female echidna named Tikal fighting with her father. She implores him to stop the war and to strive for peace. He refuses and then Knuckles is brought back to the present, finding himself now in Station Square and more than a little confused. Brushing this odd experience off for now, he goes into the Station Square lobby and sees Eggman holding something shiny in his hands. Believing it to tbe a piece of the Master Emerald, he follows Eggman and demands he give him what he has. But it turns out to be a Chaos Emerald, not a shard of the Master Emerald. Eggman decides to use Knuckles as a test subject and calls out the same creature that had destroyed the Master Emerald. Its name is Chaos and Eggman gives it the Chaos Emerald he has, causing it to transform and attack Knuckles. He fights it and wins, leaving Eggman to say that Chaos isn't up to his full potential. This does nothing to scare the echidna but Eggman is unfazed by this and tells him that Sonic is after the Master Emerald. Before he can ask about this, Eggman leaves and Knuckles decides to find Sonic and ask him about all of this. He travels to Mystic Ruins, finding a few more shards of the Emerald there. As he leaves to search elsewhere, he find Sonic and Tails are there as well. Happy to have found his friends, his happiness quickly fades as he sees the green gem Sonic is holding, believing it to be a piece of the Master Emerald. Not even giving Sonic a chance to explain, he engages him in a battle which ends up in a tie and knocks the two Emeralds that Sonic was holding out of his hands. Eggman comes out of his hiding spot and grabs the Emeralds, causing Knuckles to realize that he got tricked yet again. Eggman gives the two Emeralds to Chaos which transforms it again and Knuckles offers to make up for his mistake by fighting the creature. He does and wins once more, Eggman using the fight as a distraction to escape on his ship, the Egg Carrier. Sonic and Tails decide to go after him but Knuckles declines to follow, telling them to go on ahead. As they go after Eggman, Knuckles goes to the forest of the Mystic Ruins hoping to find more shards there. During his search, he stumbles upon a ruin that has two keyholes, one gold and one silver. He finds the keys and places them in the proper holes, a white light surrounding him and pulling him to the past again. Confused, he looks around and finds Tikal at the Emerald Shrine. She begs the entity there to take the Emeralds somewhere else but it refuses, saying it can't leave that spot. Tikal is distraught, saying she will ask her father again to stop all of this. She leaves the shrine, passing by Knuckles as she does and then vanishes, leaving him at the shrine alone and as he'd left it. Taking advantage of this, he reassembles the pieces of the Emerald he'd collected, placing them on the altar. Unfortunately, the Emerald was still incomplete and it shows an image of the Egg Carrier, causing Knuckles to believe that the last three shards are there. Luckily, one of Eggman's robots comes around and he follows it to the ship, managing to get on it just before it takes off. He searches the ship and finds the remaining pieces but before he can celebrate, he's pulled back to the past again. This time, the whole place is ablaze, Tikal lying face-down on the ground. He helps her up, asks if she's all right and what's going on. She replies by saying she had no idea things would turn out like they had. He sees that there's a fire around the Master Emerald, Tikal leaving to go help the entity. before he can stop her, he's pulled back to the present and told by the light that has been helping him that his friends are in danger. He runs off to help them, finding them when he spots a bright flash at the front of the ship. As he gets there, he sees Sonic battling Eggman and rushes to his side to support him. But Eggman escapes and Sonic goes after him. Knuckles doesn't follow, instead deciding to leave and repair the Master Emerald. Before he can even do that, however, he's halted by Chaos. Though the battle is harder this time, he fights him off and manages to leave the Egg Carrier to put the Master Emerald together again. With the Emerald intact once more, the Island floats back up to the sky. The peace is short-lived, however, as it falls back to ground level. Figuring its from the two Chaos Emeralds he has with him, he goes to ask Sonic's advice. On his way there, he sees Eggman fighting Chaos and, before he can do anything, Knuckles is attacked as well. Meanwhile, Tails had told Sonic that Angel Island had fallen again and he rushes over there, finding Eggman and Knuckles knocked out. Sonic wakes Knuckles up who tells him about how Chaos attacked them both and stole the Chaos Emeralds. Chaos has now turned into his final form and, using the power of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic manages to defeat it which thus ends that "little" adventure.

But just two of them wouldn't be enough, now would it? Let's move on to yet another~ This time, a bat named Rouge has stolen the Master Emerald and Knuckles has tracked her down. While both are arguing over possession of it, Eggman appears and tries to steal it for himself. Knuckles won't allow it, leaping up and shattering the Emerald, earning Rouge's wrath and starting a race between the two to gather the shards of the Emerald. Because of this, he ends up being distanced from the action that Sonic and everyone else is involved in for some time. He manages to get involved when he pops up from a sewer hole after getting lost in the mines, finding Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog, and Tails talking to Sonic on a radio. Tails leaves Amy with Knuckles and the two catch up with Sonic and the fox later outside of Eggman's secret pyramid base. Tails finds the entrance but it's locked. Sonic tells Knuckles to find the key, a task he gripes at, wondering why he had to be the one to do it. His complaint is short-lived and he goes to find it anyways, doing so easy enough but his search riled up a rather large ghost he had to vanquish as well. The others catch up to him afterwards and Eggman appears before they can do anything, sending a large golem out to attack them. Sonic fights it and makes it go haywire, it turning to attack Eggman instead. With him out of the way, they're free to board the space shuttle docked in the pyramid. The launch is successful but as they approach the space colony ARK, they find themselves surrounded by rocks from the Eclipse Cannon's earlier firing. Since none of them are really qualified to pilot a shuttle, they nearly crash into one of the rocks, only managing to roll the spacecraft at the last minute but impacting the top of it on the obstacle. The jolt opens the cargo hold and ejects all the shards Knuckles had collected already into space. Frustrated, he leaves his friends to re-collect all the pieces and runs into Rouge. The two end up battling one another for the Emerald pieces, neither of them really conceding defeat. Their physical battle degenerates into one of words, trading barbs on a girder above a lava pit. Rouge nearly falls off of the girder and would have met a rather nasty fate if it weren't for Knuckles grabbing her by the wrist to prevent it. In return for this she gives him the shards she had, completing the Master Emerald. Knuckles apologizes for hurting her then rushes off to help his friends. Along the way, he pauses, feeling a strange energy and a flash of light appearing in front of him. The light disappears quickly, Sonic appearing in its wake, lying on the ground. He runs over to see if his friend is all right, finding out that Sonic used something called Chaos Control to end up there. Not managing to get many answers from Sonic, Knuckles does get the request to help Tails and Amy while Sonic rushes ahead to put his plan into motion. The plan seems to work and successfully stops the Eclipse Cannon from firing but it also seemed to have unlocked a security measure in the ARK itself. Knuckles and Sonic arrive at the lab where Tails and Amy are, Rouge showing up not long after, saying that the space colony was hurtling toward Earth at an incredible speed. Professor Gerald Robotnik, Eggman's grandfather and the man who created the ARK, had made the space colony to hurtle toward Earth if all seven Chaos Emeralds were collected as a final act of revenge on those who stole his granddaughter, Maria, from him. Eggman tells them they need to stop the energy of the Chaos Emeralds, leading Rouge to suggest using the Master Emerald since it can neutralize the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. All of them band together to get to the cannon's core and stop it once and for all. Sonic and Knuckles reach the core, finding that it looks like the Emerald Shrine on Angel Island, possibly designed that way to harness the Chaos Emeralds' full power. Before they can set the Master Emerald on the altar, the "ultimate life form" prototype called the Biolizard appears between them and their destination. Shocked at the creature's appearance, they aren't even given the opportunity to battle it because Shadow comes to do so, distracting it so they can get to the altar. Thanks to this, they are able to get there and Knuckles invokes the Master Emerald, making the Biolizard disappear. But this doesn't stop the ARK from falling toward Earth, the Biolizard having integrated itself into the ARK and forcing it to fall even faster. Sonic and Shadow use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to become their advanced forms and to fight the Biolizard. They fight and win, using Chaos Control to put the ARK back in its place. However, Shadow doesn't return, having sacrificed himself to save everyone else, a point driven home when Sonic returns to the lab where everyone is taking a well-deserved rest. It's while Knuckles is talking to Rouge that he's taken into Avoria, yay~ XD

Knuckles is rather anti-social, thanks to the earlier-mentioned solitary life he's led on Angel Island. His first duty in life is to protect the Master Emerald and ensure no one steals it. Unfortunately, this makes him a little too trusting of people and, as long as you know what he considers his life's duty, you can manipulate him to doing anything. However, he's also loyal to the friends he does have, again, so long as they don't get in his way though he generally prefers to be alone rather than with a large group. He has a severe dislike of technology because he has no idea how it works, preferring traditional methods of doing things instead. His dislike of technology also leads to him hating large cities, finding them a little too crowded and out of his league.

Powers... Ah, well, he's got two spikes on each hand which he uses for digging. This won't be lost when he gets to Avoria, however, his incredible strength will be diminished somewhat, meaning he can't just pick up a large rock and expect to toss it like a pebble. He can also climb things and glide for short periods of time by gathering air under his dreadlock-style quills but I swear he won't just scale a building and glide down to scare the crap out of someone. XD All of his other special powers are gone considering he won't have the equipment for it.
